Buick : A Brief History

Buick is a name we have grown to know and trust when referring to an automobile. The Buick Motor Company was incorporated in 1903 in Flint, Michigan. The name came from the owner, David Dunbar Buick, inventor of the overhead valve engine. However, a year later, the struggling company was taken over by James Whiting. Whiting put William C. Durant in charge of his new company. Durant was a great manager and soon, Buick was the largest car manufacturer in the country. Eventually, Durant was able to invest his money in General Motors. To keep the car manufacturers from competing against each other, Durant devised a system at which each car would target a different audience. The Buick became second in class only to the luxurious Cadillac.

Today, Buick still holds a very highly thought of position in the General Motors lineup of cars. Buicks are seen as cars more often than not drive by buyers who are not rich, but very comfortable in their finances. However, there has been rumors recently of the plan to completely eliminate the Buick line. That will not happen any time soon as the Enclave will be introduced at the end of 2006 as the new Buick sports utility vehicle.

Through the years, Buicks have been manufactured and sold throughout the world. Most Buicks today are sold in either the United States or Canada, but before World War II, they were so popular in other countries that one out of every five cars in China were Buicks. Today, a version of the Century/Regal is built in China under the Shanghai GM name.

Nearly 35 million Buick automobiles have been produced over the last 95 years in Flint. Buick has made a name and reputation for itself as a dependable and affordable way to drive in style.
