BMW is a name that means quality in automobiles. Loved and driven by many, they are both high performance and luxury vehicles, and often called Beamers and use the slogans “The ultimate driving machine” and “sheer driving pleasure.” But, how many people coveting BMW autos know the originals of this company? In 1913, Karl Friedrich Rapp founded the company to build aircraft engines, which is reflected today in the logo, a blue and white checkered Bavarian flag with a white propeller spinning in a blue sky colored background.

Their first car, a licensed version of the British Austin 7, was manufactured in 1927. During the Second World War, the company branched out to make motorcycles and returned to making cars in 1952. There was a move at the time to sell the company to Daimler-Benz, which is today their main competitor, but it as saved by Kurt Golda, chairman of the Board of Directors, who pushed for marketing a small car with an air cooled, rear mounted motorcycle engine called the BMW 700. In 1961 at the Frankfurt Auto Show, BMW introduced the 1500, first of the modern Beamers with the unique rear window they all have today, known as the Hofmeister kink.

BMW’s success as an automaker today cannot be argued. Competing directly with luxury and high performance cars like Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, Lexus and Cadillac, BMW has bought up some of their competitors through the years. BMW acquisitions included the British legend Rolls Royce and for a time, Rover.

BMW have also made a name for themselves in auto racing, having won many of the world’s most competitive automobile contests. The BMW automobile stands out in a crowd and have even become something of a status symbol in the United States. In the 1980’s, young professionals with money to burn began to look at the BMW as a status symbol. Today it is known for quality, and especially for sheer driving pleasure.
