Audi cars today are well known for offering quite a bit of luxury at a good price. The car manufacturer is a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, and has its headquarters located in Germany. Their tagline in English means, "Advantage through Technology." Audis are also known for their ability to withstand rust and corrosion. This is due to the galvanizing process of the cars, where the bodies are coated entirely in zinc. Audi were the first to introduce the all-aluminum car with the release of the A8 model in 1994. Along with Subaru, they designed all-wheel drive passenger cars in the 1970's, and when the system became popular in the 1980's, no other car manufacturer was able to surpass their quality.
During the 1980's and 1990's, Audi introduced changes to their cars to make them more desirable to their target customers. This included a 5 cylinder, 2.1/2.2 L engine instead of a 6 cylinder. This was known to be less popular, and in 1992, the 100 model and the 2.8 L V6 engine, also used in the 80 model, was released. The 5 cylinder was dropped soon afterwards. The naming style used today, a letter with a number, began with the S2 and S4. Other models were replaced with newer models of the same naming style beginning with the A4 replacing the 80 and the 100 became the A6.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the direct-shift gearbox was introduced to automobiles by Audi. This is a semi-automatic transmission, a manual transmission with the feel of an automatic that is said to shift faster and smoother, while consuming less gas than normal manual transmissions. Today, Audi continues to introduce new technological advances for the automobile to the public. They are a popular auto manufacturer and are admired for their combination of luxury and drivability.
